WHAT TO SEE IN AGRIGENTO?
Begin the tour of Agrigento by visiting the Cathedral of S. Gerlando, then proceed to the Church of Santa Maria dei Greci and the Santo Spirito Monastery. Now go on to the Regional Archaeological Museum, then head to the Valley of the Temples, a few kilometers from the historic center. Visit the Rupe Atenea and the Temple of Demeter, incorporated into the Church of San Biagio. Proceed towards the Temples of Juno and Concordia. Go on to see the other temples, the Telamons and the Garden of the Kolymbethra. Finally, add to your itinerary the Luigi Pirandello House Museum. In the surroundings of Agrigento you will also find the Scala dei Turchi, Capo Rosso beach, Torre Salsa Nature Reserve, Sciacca and Eraclea Minoa.
SPECIALTIES OF AGRIGENTO
Take a seat at the table and start with a good appetizer. There is something for everyone: seafood salad, artichokes stuffed with shrimp or panelle (fried dough of chickpea flour). As a first course, you can choose among cavatelli all’agrigentina, spaghetti with pistachios and prawns, fettuccine with scampi and the tiano di Aragona (a tray of baked pasta). Also try the cuttlefish soup or the macco di San Giuseppe (broad bean cream). Typical fish-based second courses are sardines a beccafico with pine nuts and breadcrumbs, baked red snapper and mussels au gratin. If you like meat, take the sweet-and-sour rabbit.
