WHAT TO SEE IN PADUA
Start from Padua bus terminal and head to the Scrovegni Chapel and the Giardini dell’Arena. From there, continue towards Piazza dei Signori and admire the Clock Tower. Now, reach Piazza delle Erbe on which the ‘Palazzo della Ragione’ overlooks. Not far from the square is Palazzo del Bo (the historical seat of the University of Padua). Continue towards the Civic Museums, a complex of meuseums and historic sites centered around the former convent of the Emeritani. Then visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and its Baptistery. Stop at the Museum of the History of Medicine, then head to the Basilica of Sant’Antonio in Padua.
Make a stop at the Botanical Garden, then go to Prato della Valle, the largest square in Italy, and one of the largest in Europe, at the centre of which is the Memmia Island, a green island surrounded by a small canal bordered by two rings of statues. While you are there, enter the Loggia Amulea.
If you have time for a small excursion out of town, go to the Euganean Hills Regional Park.
GASTRONOMIC SPECIALTIES
More than a gastronomic tradition of the city we are talking about a typical regional cuisine, characterized by simple recipes and genuine flavors. Udine’s excellences are Prosciutto San Daniele, Prosciutto di Sauris (a smoked ham from the village of Sauris) and goose salami. Frico is one the most typical dishes of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Its preparation varies from one location to another. The recipe includes potatoes, onions and cheese, amalgamated and cooked in a frying pan.
Among the most common first courses we find polenta, cjarzons (typical sweet and salty ravioli seasoned with herbs, various meats and cheeses), risotto allo sclopit and orzotto. Vegetables are widely used both for the preparation of omelettes and as side dishes. Examples are the brovada (white turnip) and the asparagus.
Regional cuisine abounds with fish-based main courses such as the turbot, the boreto alla graisana (pan-roasted pieces of sea bass in a unique sauce) and the salmon trout. For those who prefer meat there is cotechino (pork sausage), usually served with vegetables or legumes.
For dessert decide among gubana, almond cake, sweet strucolo and the most popular ones: strudel and tiramisu. Of course, enjoy it all with a good glass of Picolit or Pinot Grigio.
