WHAT TO SEE IN BARI
Start your tour from the old Bari, which is dominated by the Norman-Swabian Castle and where the Basilica of San Nicola stands. The area is surrounded by the city walls and it is full of churches. One worth seeing is the Cathedral of San Sabino. Go through via Arco Basso and observe the artisan preparation of fresh pasta. Now take a detour and visit the Fortino di San’Antonio Abate. Afterwards, go to via Cavour and admire the beauty of Petruzzelli Theatre. Continue along the city’s waterfront and enjoy the view of the Adriatic Sea and of the Art Nouveau buildings, including the Theatre Kursaal Santa Lucia and the Palace of the Province. Finally, visit the Painting Gallery ‘Corrado Giaquinto’.
Some places of great beauty are the Caves of Castellana, Altamura, Mola and Puntignano and, of course, the village of Alberobello, with its dense concentration of Trulli. If you want to spend a few days at the seaside, we recommend the towns of Polignano and Monopoli.
GASTRONOMIC SPECIALTIES
The ingredients of Bari cuisine are simple and genuine. Sit at the table and let yourself be tempted by the taralli (traditional bread buiscuits) or the aubergines in oil.
The top dishes are orecchiette with turnip greens or horse ragù. Among the most common first courses you will also find cavatelli with seafood, pasta with cabbage and Bari-style rice.
The typical main course based on meat is braciole, or ‘brasciole’, as Bari people say. They are beef rolls stuffed with parsley, garlic and and pecorino and cooked in a tomato sauce. For those who prefer vegetables, we suggest a plate of broad beans and chicory. Instead, if you love the flavors of the sea, you are spoiled for choice: octopus, “allievi” (small cuttlefish), sea urchins and a great variety of local fish.
End your meal with a good dessert. Delight yourself with bocconotti, castegnedde, zeppole and pasta reale (almond paste). Bari also offers lots of street food specialties. From focaccia to panzerotto, from calzone barese to popizze (round fried pancakes) and sgagliozze (quadrangular slices of polenta). You will only have to taste them all and find your favorite one!
BARI STAZIONE FS
This bus stop is located in via Giuseppe Capruzzi at the corner of Largo Sorrentino. It consists of a small open space, right in front of the rear pedestrian entrance to the Train Station. At the bus stop there is the Onbus signpost. Passengers can wait for the bus under the portico. Near the bus stop, there is the snack bar – tobacconist ‘La Brasserie’, where you can buy travel tickets for Sicily. It is open every day from 04:00 to 22:00, non-stop.
BARI ATS VIAGGI
This bus stop is located in via Giuseppe Capruzzi n. 224/C, close to the travel agency ‘Ats Viaggi’. The buses pull over as close as possible to the travel agency, where there is free space. At the agency it is possible to buy Buscenter travel tickets for Sicily. The agency is located between the Automobile Club of Italy (ACI) and the Bar Pasticceria Manhattan, close to the headquarters of the Puglia Regional Council. The bus stop is about three minutes walk from the rear pedestrian entrance to the Train Station.
