To really discover the city, also visit the fish market, where you can observe the fascinating old folk traditions and Baroque architecture. If you want to live a thrilling experience, visit the underground Catania and the Historical Museum of the Landing in Sicily 1943.
We just have to invite you to visit the best beaches on the Catania coast and take an excursion to Mount Etna.
CATANESE SPECIALTIES
Street food is a true lifestyle in Catania. The crown belongs to arancini, but scacciate (pies with local cheeses, anchovies and vegetables), crispelle (fried dough stuffed with ricotta cheese and anchovies) and zeppole di riso (rice fritters) are worthy opponents. Then there are the cartocciata, the bolognese, the cipollina, the paté and the bomb. More street food not to be missed is quarumi and cipollata.
When it’s time to sit at the table, start with a good appetizer. You can choose among various local cheeses or decide for the famous caponata (sweet and sour mixed vegetables).
Pasta triumphs over the first courses: alla Norma, alla carrettiera, with sardines or with cuttlefish ink. And still more pasta: with seasoned ricotta cheese or flavoured with a pistiachio cream (pistacchiosa).
The main courses offer meat specialties such as falso magro (lean meat) and horse meat. While among the fish dishes, you will find grilled tuna, beccafico sardines and swordfish.
Finally, the desserts. Cassatelle and olivette di Sant’Agata, cannoli, iris, panzerotti, pistachio from Bronte and brioche with granita or ice cream, you just have to postpone the diet to another time!
