WHAT TO SEE IN MESSINA
Begin your tour of Messina by visiting the Church of Santa Maria degli Alemanni and the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani Church. Continue the tour with Palazzo Calapaj-D’alcontres and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Enter the Bell Tower and admire the Astronomical Clock. In Piazza Duomo you will also find the Fountain of Orion. Now visit Palazzo Zanca, then walk along the promenade until you reach the Neptune Fountain. From here you can see the Madonnina del porto. Complete the tour by stopping at the Regional Museum of the city.
In the surroundings of Messina there are many enchanting places to visit, such as Taormina – with its ancient Greek Theatre and the Natural Reserve of Isola Bella – the medieval village of Novara di Sicilia, Tindari, Milazzo and the villages of Valle d’Agrò. Of course, don’t miss a few days relax in the wonderful Aeolian Islands.
MESSINESI SPECIALTIES
Sit down at the table and taste the Majorcan cheese and the calcagno (a typical pecorino cheese) together with the local salami. Another typical appetizer is caponata.
As first course choose among: linguine with seafood, pasta with anchovies or pasta with sardines, pasta with breadcrumbs or pasta with cauliflower.
Among the second courses there are seafood dishes such as “stocco alla ghiotta” (salted codfish and tomato, capers, olives, and potatoes), blue fish, grilled swordfish, sardines “a beccafico” and mussels “impepata”. Among the meat specialities you will find the Nebrodi black pig and the falso magro.
For dessert try with pignolata, or black and white, cannoli, cassate, royal pasta and granitas.
Do not forget to accompany your meal with a good glass of Memertino.
MESSINA BUS STOP
Our bus stop is in Piazza della Repubblica, in front of the Train Station. To reach it by tram, simply get off at “Repubblica” stop where, a few meters away, is located our tickets sale point, always opened during the hours of the various departures. For those arriving by train, simply exit the station and walk a few metres to the left to reach the sale point.
