WHAT TO SEE IN TRENTO?
Start your tour from the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and continue towards the picturesque via Belenzani, then visit Palazzo Thun. Now head to Piazza Duomo and visit the Basilica of San Vigilio, Palazzo Pretorio and the Civic Tower. In the centre of the square you can admire the Fountain of Neptune.
Stop at Palazzo Roccabruna, then visit the Castello del Buonconsiglio Museum and Torre Aquila.
Finally, pass by Piazza Cesare Battisti and visit the Sas Underground Archaeological Space. Other stops to add to your itinerary are Palazzo delle Albere and the MUSE (Trento Science Museum).
We also recommend a trip to the Integral Nature Reserve ‘Tre Cime del Monte Bondone’ and to the Valle dei Laghi.
Start with the appetizers and discover some of the many regional products such as carne salà and mortandela (two typical salami of the province of Trento) speck and puzzone di Moena (a DOP cheese made from raw cow’s milk).
Sauerkraut and polenta are a must in the city, but you can also taste various types of pasta such as canederli (bread dumplings topped with speck), brò brusà (soup with a toasted flavor, enriched with smoked bacon), strangolapreti (bread dumplings enriched with spinach), barley soup and patào (yellow flour minestrone with sauerkraut).
Second courses are mainly meat dishes, especially game ones. You may also try the Ossei scampadi, that is, escaped birds, an ancient recipe from Trentino that dates back to at least the sixteenth century. These are small veal rolls, larded with speck or pancetta, the shape of which would remind you of that of small birds, which however are not there because they “ran away”. We also suggest the sguazet (stewed with veal offal and served with polenta) or the tortel di patate.
The most typical desserts are the apple pie and the strudel, but also try the torta di fregoloti.
Enjoy it all with a good local wine such as Marzemino.
